GCPH Seminar Series 11: Lecture 5 - Linda de Caestecker

11 Mar 2015

The Lighthouse, 11 Mitchell Lane, Glasgow, G1 3NU, United Kingdom

Seminar

Re-imagining Justice for Women

The seminar explored how our agencies have failed many women offenders and described a promising gender-responsive approach in Glasgow.

The female prison population in Scotland doubled in the ten years to 2011. Many female offenders are deeply vulnerable people whose most common pathways to crime are based on survival of abuse, poverty and substance misuse.

Dr Linda de Caestecker, described her work with the Angiolini Commission on Women Offenders which reported in April 2012 and the response to its recommendations. Anne Gallacher, Team Leader and Jim McBride from Glasgow City Council described the subsequent establishment of a community justice centre to reduce re-offending and bring about behavioural change. Tomorrow’s Women is a community justice centre for women in Glasgow taking a ground-breaking approach in involving women in the design and running of the centre and providing practical support as well as ensuring a trauma-informed model of care. Women’s views and feedback on the centre were part of the seminar.
