Jerry Sternin, Co-founder, Positive Deviance Initiative, Tufts University, Boston led the seminar on: 'Social Change from the Inside Out'
Key ideas:
- Positive Deviance: doing better than expected in relation to some factor than other people with the same resources.
- TBU (True but Useless): a factor which, while true for one person, is not accessible to another and so therefore cannot help with more widespread transformation.
- The Four Ds: define, determine, discover, and develop.
About the speaker
Jerry Sternin is regarded as the Founder of the Positive Deviance approach, has extensive experience working with Positive Deviance around the world.
Among his other accomplishments, he was the country director for Save the Children (US) in Bangladesh, Philippines, Viet Nam, Egypt and most recently, Burma. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer and Country Director in Rwanda, Mauritania, Nepal and the Phillipines, as well as Assistant Dean and Student Advisor at the Harvard Business School.
