Concepts Series 7

May 2009

This briefing paper describes the Healthy Sustainable Neighbourhoods Model, a model which allows the assessment and moderation of the ‘balance’ between key aspects of the urban ‘experience’, place making and development planning scenarios.

The paper introduces and presents the Healthy Sustainable Neighbourhood (HSN) Model. The HSN model, which is a planning interpretation of the ‘Social Model of Health, provides a framework for integrated thinking around the constituents of a healthy sustainable neighbourhood and to support planners and others involved in the regeneration process to integrate not only health considerations in urban planning but also issues of equality and sustainability. The paper discusses the context, key values and potential applications of the Model.
